What are cylindrical roller bearings

There are many different types of bearings, each with their own advantages. The right part is critical to your design, which is why bearing suppliers like Ritbearing offer a wide range of bearing styles to suit your design

Cylindrical Roller Bearing Basics

The main difference between cylindrical roller bearings and other bearing types is the name - they use cylinders as rolling elements instead of the balls found in ball bearings. The length of the cylinder is slightly greater than the diameter. Cylindrical rollers have a greater radial load capacity than ball bearings. The cylindrical roller design also allows these components to accept relatively faster speeds than other types of roller bearings.

There are many types of cylindrical roller bearings. Single row cylindrical rollers are the most popular and are separable, which makes installation and removal easier. However, these may not be able to support radial loads for some applications. Double and multi-row cylindrical roller bearings provide greater radial load capacity and can also transmit axial loads in one direction.

Like other types, cylindrical roller bearings have different clearance and lubrication options, depending on the manufacturer and supplier. Cylindrical roller bearings can be made with cages or as full complement parts.

What is the use of cylindrical roller bearings?

Cylindrical roller bearings combine greater radial load capacity, the ability to accommodate faster speeds and other advantages, making them ideal for use in a variety of industries. Typical markets that can utilize these components include:oil and gasgearboxWind Turbinesmachine toolelectric motormaterial handlingPump and steel mill.

What are the common causes of cylindrical roller bearing failures?

Like all other types of bearings, cylindrical rollers require care and maintenance. Spalling or pitting, cracking and chipping, scratching and rusting are the most common causes of cylindrical roller bearing failure.Fortunately, you can limit the risk of bearing failure. There are some precautions you can take to reduce the risk of bearing damage. Check out our post on what you can do to help prevent or detect the following potential problems:

1.Contamination, Improper Installation and Misalignment

2.Corrosion, Lubrication, Grooving and Fatigue

3.Overheating, overloading, improper storage or handling, and improper installation
